In Galatians 5:16-17 Paul says, “walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want.” Although it is the Spirit who works in us, this command by Paul is to the believer. It is a great paradox that tends to be overemphasized in one direction or the other.
If we are walking, or living our lives according to the Spirit, we cannot be doing the things the flesh desires. On the other hand, if we are carrying out the desires of the flesh, we are not walking by the Spirit.
